maybe, maybe not but you'll probably get replies such as

no its not
its fine
33.5 shipped, 31.7 sold, looks good to me
ever heard of warehouse, trucking and cargo ships
sony probably flooded the market to hit targets
if it is then the xbox360 is also under tracked
if you dont like it leave
and so on and so forth

anyways, good luck :P

Well, warehouses, trucks, and cargo ships aren't included. That's what Sony amended about their reporting three years ago.

Yes they are.  Units are now counted when they leave Sony for retail.  Previous "Production Shipments" also included any units off the assembly line, including unshipped retail orders and units warehoused by Sony themselves.

Sony changed their accounting method to fall in line with what Nintendo and Microsoft use (ie: sold in).

And jesus christ, not this thread again.  2-3m in channel is NORMAL people!

No it's not normal for a console with high sales at year end and shortages in US.

I dunno, the gap seems a little big..

If shipped by December 2009 is 33.52m, and sold by January 2010 is 31.76m, then there must be around 2 million PS3s on shelves (including whatever they shipped for the month of January). 2 million on shelves seems to be a lot..

Am I missing something...?

nope your spot on, lots of people have noticed that, trust me i have tried, and they keep on making excuses they think that most of it is for january, and may still be on it's way to shelves, i disagree, not all of it will i consider at least 1 million of that to be sold, so the ps3 in my books needs to be adjusted up.

That's why you aren't a sales analyst.  You have no access to data, you just let your feelings cloud your judgement.  PS3 Slims have been overflooding shelves at every videogame retailer around me.  All gamestops, walmarts, best buys have loads of them in piles.  I'm guessing like someone else said, that they flooded the market around the holidays and shipped too many units.

There were never any PS3 shortages in the US....

but there were shortages, i remember people reporting them, just because you did not experience any in your area does not mean nowhere else did, you don't have access to the data either, this is getting tiring now.

Not a very reliable source, but, If true that makes the chances of the PS3 being undertracked more likely.

But why's there so much talk about the PS3, has anyone seen the PS3 numbers?

360 was at 36.6m when Microsoft's 38.7m shipment figure applies.

Not even then.  Maybe at walmarts or something... but stores like Best Buy had truck loads the whole time.  Heck around me there were even plenty of the 120gb model everywhere.
