Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 performing better than PS1?!

Interesting. How long after the PS1 did it take for the ps2 to come out. Just wondering.

6 years, but considering the PS3's specs it's not unlikely a PS4 will take much longer to release. I think it's more likely we will rather see upgraded PS3 specifications for long after the PS3's first 6 years like a new control scheme (optional extra), upgraded storage space and potentially an even slimmer slim model, etc. Sony 10 year+ plan for the PS3 seems entirely feasible at this point.

PS3 vs 360 sales

hmmm

something is off about that comparison.

The PS3 simply is not selling at as fast a rate. I don;t think the PS3 will do as good this year as the PSone did.

Still, great to hear Sony is out of the red. PS3's an awesome system. Its awesome that the market can handle three systems, each selling really great.

Good call.

For one PS1 released in Japan in December 1994... it released in the US/EU in September of 1995.

Vs Playstation 3 which was released practically simaltaniously in November of 2006.

So the PS3 has about a year advantage in two of the three big markets in this comparison.

If you add in the extra year for Europe and NA PS1 sales are about 46.04 million at this point.  Minus a short amount for shipping since they didn't change reporting methods yet.  Though that's less important then this generation considering how popular the PS1 was.

Many new kinds of console gamers seem to have entered the market, the console market has skyrocketed. But on the other hand PC gaming sales have rapidly declined over the past years.

LOL... You know... the PS3 also performed better than the Wii back in October 2009, if I'm not mistaken....

The gaming industry has grown since those days, if the PS1 made 2/3 of the market, that's obviously a lot, but, the PS3 isn't doing anywhere near 2/3s of the Market, and Wii barely has over half. So, yeah, the PS3 is not performing as well as PS1, because it doesn't have 2/3s of the market. The industry has grown, and so has the technology in the systems, so, to me, PS3 isn't doing anything too great what-so-ever.... I'll tell you what, though, I want my Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and I want my Mod Nation Racers RIGHT NOW!!! lol.

I'm wondering the same thing too, just too bad VGchartz doesn't have a chart for PS1 :(

I just posted a chart for PS1 shipped figures.

The reason the Ps3 mistakenly looks like it's doing as well as the PS1 is because the PS1 launched a year later in the US and EU while the PS3 launched simaltaniously in all markets.

The point still remains... it had a HUGE jump on the PS1 if you blindly compare the first launch dates together.

When you compare them properly with all the launch dates aligned... the PS3 is not selling like the PS1.

Also, the numbers published in the OP are SHIPPED numbers for the PS3. Not SOLD.
