Forums - Sony Discussion - Accordin to this, PS3 has sold 33.5m not 31.7m

Lol, we have a lot of shipped vs sold to consumer threads on this site. It may seem odd that the PS3 numbers may be low compared to Sony's shipped figure but at the end of the day this site is tracking worldwide with less data than most tracking firms (on a region by region basis). The numbers might not always be 100% accurate but they still give very good approximate values and are valuable for looking at sales trends.

OMFG!

ioi or who ever is in charge please just give the PS3 numbers a boost already. This stuff is bordering on obsesion with these people. Getting sick of seeing some Sony fan compaining with a new thread about how VGC has screwed Sony in some way by undertracking there PS3's.

Must we go through this every week?

Sony reports sold to retailers (VGC calls this shipped, Sony calls it sold)
VGC reports sold to consumers (VGC calls this sold, Sony calls it sellthrough)

The PS3 numbers were adjusted down because the PS3 had been overtracked in the smaller European countries for 3-4 years.

this is kinda ironic...

sony had said the ps3 did some 31M by DEC 09..

while the 360 had done 39M, IOI said those are likely consumer sales

now when sony says 33M, they are shipped?

Why should he boost the numbers just for some 'rowdy' fans who can't/won't accept where they currently stand?

Of course they shouldn't...I was just venting lol.

They can say their ass is on fire when in public,  but when it comes to financial reports they have to be very careful to follow the accounting principles set forth in previous reports without deviation. Shipped in the financial reports means the same as it meant in 2009 and 2008 but not 2007 since Sony changed the accounting method. If any changes to what shipped means, then it has to be clearly stated within the financial report of they will be heavily fined and possibly criminally charged.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Oh, thank you, but why were the PS3 hardware sales higher in the end of December than they are now.

Numbers released from Nordic sales trackers showed that the PS3 was being overtracked by this site.

The more interesting thin is that the lead for the 360 in terms of shipped is about 5.2m and sold it is 5.7m. The PS3 has shipped 33.5m and the 360 shipped 38.7m

So have Sony been channel stuffing? Or one of them them wrongly tracked?

The more relevant figure is what they had sold as of 2nd January:
PS3 30.9m
360 37.0m

So apparently, there are 2.6m PS3s on shelves and 1.7m 360s. I think ioi was right the first time. Or do they measure these figures differently in some way?

It seems they do measure those figures differently in some way... since VGcharts is in concordance with the rest of the trackers world wide, yet Sony's PSP and PS2 numbers are off.

One guess is that replacement units have been counted at least in some regions.

Potentially two things.  One, there are always bigger differences in sold to shipped in the holiday quarter.  Take a look at DS shipped compared to sold and you'll see quite a difference as well.  Think it iis about 2 million as well.  Same for 360 as you mentioned. But we could probably attribute the other part to potential stuffing of the market.  Something Sony has been doing with the PSP but maybe a little bit with the PS3 this time.  Now I know whne that is mentioned, it is usually taken as a negative term, but companies do it with retailers all the time so don't take it negatively.

For reference, the most extreme case of this was back with the 360 at the end of 2006.  MS had a goal of hitting 10 million and they achieved it but through stuffing the market.  At the end of 2006 they had shipped 10.4 million 360s and we have sales at 6.71 million.  Of course it was very easy to tell that they did it because over the next 2 quarters (or 6 months) MS only shipped 1.2 milllion 360s or actually 600k per quarter.

Could have had something similar with Ps3 but won't know until we see this quarter's shipments.  But, companies do it all the time to hit their projections.

Sony PS3 "Shipped to Retail" July-Sept 2009: 3.2 Million
VGC PS3 "Sold to Consumer" July-Sept 2009: 2.45 Million

Sony PS3 "Shipped to Retail" Oct-Dec 2009: 6.5 Million
VGC PS3 "Sold to Consumer" Oct-Dec 2009: 6.49 Million

Sony PS3 "Shipped to Retail" Launch-Sept 2009: 27.02
VGC PS3 "Sold to Consumer" Launch-Sept 2009: 24.36

Sony PS3 "Shipped to Retail" Launch-Dec 2009: 33.52
VGC PS3 "Sold to Consumer" Launch-Dec 2009: 30.85

If Sony is stuffing the channels, it's the second quarter in a row they've done so. Either Sony doesn't plan on shipping any more PS3s for a long period this year or we have incorrectly assumed that Sony stuffed their channels last quarter.

The numbers do seem to be a bit more generous as to how many 360 consoles are left on shelves out of what they shipped versus how many PS3s are left on shelves out of what they shipped.

Also, imo, It's strange that Nintendo's figures seem to be pointing out how many 360s and PS3s have sold too.

Even more so when we consider that the PS3 was having shortages of the 120GB near the end of December.  For me the numbers just don't add up.  Now, if shortages were not being reported at all, then this info would be much more acceptable.
