Forums - Gaming - (VI)rtua Fighter Crossroads announced

Releasing in 2027.

While VF traditionally opted for a no-frills, competition-focused experience, this new installment, developed by AM2, RGG Studio, and Atlus, will feature a robust story mode that takes a lot of cues from Street Fighter 6's World Tour mode. Series stalwarts like Akira, Pai, Wolf, and Sarah, appear older and more hardened.

It has been 20 years since VF5 first released, and I am definitely ready for this. After so long of Tekken being the only game in town for 3D fighters, and with the upcoming Dead or Alive 7, I am hoping to see a 3D fighting game renaissance.

So hyped for this. VF is my favorite fighter but the SP has definitely been a big weakness for the franchise. If they can make the game (nearly) as fun to play alone as it is competitively then we could have something special on our hands. Everything I've seen so far looks amazing regardless. Can't wait to see more.

We know there are four new characters now. I hope most the classic cast returns. I'm sure Lau Chan and Shun Di are a no go for obvious reasons.

This is basically Virtua Fighter RPG the original pitch for Shenmue.

VF left the arcade era more reluctantly than other fighters. VF was far more successful than Tekken in the arcades, but Namco saw the post-arcade world to come and planned accordingly with single-player content like Tekken Force and Edge Master Mode. The best fighting game on PS2 was VF4 Evolution, which I felt was orders of magnitude superior to Tekken 4; its single-player mode was largely limited to Kumite mode.

Ironically, with online play, I don't really touch single-player modes anymore and play online exclusively. I probably have 55 hours in SF6, and have never touched World Tour mode. In VF5 REVO, I have close to 100 hours in that game, and I generally only play World Stage mode when I want new costume pieces. I'd just rather play with human opponents. But Capcom got the message, loud and clear, that SF5's lack of single-player content really damaged its long-term prospects, and that is why SF fell behind Mortal Kombat. Even though I don't play World Tour mode, I can still appreciate the work Capcom put into the game.  But if VF Crossroads' single-player mode is this beefy, I will probably play it... in between online rounds.

With RGG as the developer, I'm guessing that LaD characters will appear in this game, especially Kazuma, Ichiban, and Majima. You can play as Pirate Majima (and Kaz and Ichi) in Sonic Racing Crosswords, so why not a fighting game?

Hopefully that will be the case.
