Big drop for the switch 2 after the price hike.

$500 isn't cheap, especially when online isn't free.  I consider myself fairly well off, and $500 ($650 for sure) makes me wonder if it is worth it.

Switch 2

247k to 31k, yikes lol

Hopefully switch 2 can pick up to a baseline of at least 40k in the next weeks.

That's a 87% drop for Switch 2. Hard to believe... I had to take a look at Gematsu by myself to make sure it's not a typo.

As expected that price hike really hurt Switch 2 sales. Also those Switch 1 sales ain't great for its chances of reaching 160M.

Switch 2 took a big hit but its sales this week are actually a bit higher than I was expecting since if I had to guess I would've thought it'd end up in the 20's this week. It's probably gonna generally do worse than the Switch 1 did going forward but its new baseline won't be bad by any means and it's already built up a significant install base in Japan so sales slowing a lot won't be the end of the world.

For the Switch 1 sales took another hit though the OLED went up while the Lite went down for some reason. As expected the regular model is completely dead now since that one in particular is horrible value at this point. Either way it looks like this price increase has largely killed off its remaining sales potential so it probably just has a few hundred thousand left in the tank for the rest of its life. Shame it's getting cut short like this when it was still doing surprisingly well. Also the PS5 is down a lot but YoY comparison will look good again from week 25.

I absolutely think online play should be free, and I appreciate that online fees add to the price point of a console, but is $20 a year really that devastating?

In itself?  No.  But $500 for a console, $80 for a second controller, $70 games and $20 for online (or $50 for the classic games), it all just adds up.  Gaming is just expensive and I could see a lot of people going for older consoles or sticking with what they have.  Gaming is a luxury.  I find myself buying fewer games then I used too.  At some point people, me included, just wonder if my money isn't better spent elsewhere.

Edit

Side note, not directed at you, but I wonder if sales will stay low.  My prediction way back when, $500 (or more) won't sell well.  Too early to say sales are low, given just one week.  Though, I could see previous sales be artificially high, people back before the hike.  Time will tell.
