Forums - Gaming - What Are Your Favorite Genres/Types Of Video Games?

As the title of the thread states. IDK I’m just curious to hear what the folks over on VGChartz prefer when it comes to their games. Are you into strategy-heavy turn-based RPGs such as Exp33? Or do you prefer real-time strategy like Pikmin 1? Maybe you prefer a stylish platformer such as Mario Odyssey or Bubsy 4D? Or perhaps a platformer-centric platformer like 3D World or New Super Mario Bros U?

As for me, I love really just about any platformer. Mario 64 scratches that itch of a game where I can blast through a familiar world, Mario Odyssey scratches that itch of feeling fantastic and heavily personalized as to how you go about traversal of any obstacle, NSMBWii hits that somewhat challenging (but not too challenging) 2D platforming gauntlet sweet spot, and Mario Wonder if I’m looking for a nice breezy cozy platformer with phenomenal music and atmosphere. Not a huge fan of when games feature a heavy story… I’d prefer to turn my brain off and just go wild in the world.

My preference is to immerse myself in the world, not in the narration, of a game. I’m looking for more Termina Fields and less tales of the 100 expeditions of Lumiare.

Horror. Dead Space, Silent Hill, RE, etc. I love me some horror.

Switch 2

RPG is probably my favourite. Kotor, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Persona. Then 3D Platformer. Crash, Spyro, Mario, Ratchet.

Action-adventure. The king of genres. And also, arguably, the most amorphous (I think video game fans get a bit too liberal when it comes to lumping things into the category).

Basically, I prefer games that combine the best parts of action (physical challenges and time-sensitive decision-making) with the best parts of adventure (problem-solving, exploration, and storytelling). As a result, I hold franchises like Zelda and Metroid (and Metroidvanias in general) in high esteem.

I also tend to love genres that share things in common with the action-adventure template: action-platformers heavy on exploration and collection; role-playing games, both action-oriented and turn-based; first-person shooters with a strong sense of discovery; etc.

RPG , Horror and Metroidvania

Other Genres i play them but fewer.

My top ones are platformers, visual novels, RPGs and first person shooters. I'm not fully sure what my favourite game for the 2nd one is but a stronger contender is Danganronpa 2 and my favourites for the others are for sure Split Fiction, Baldur's Gate 3 and Doom Eternal. Open world racing games could also be one of my big ones since I've put a lot of time into the Forza Horizon series but I haven't tried any other ones like The Crew yet so it might be more I really like FH in particular than that genre specifically. Also if it counts games designed entirely around co-op is without a doubt also one of my big ones.

My favorite is 2D platformers, both 8 and 16-bit. Second place is a very, very distant second. So distant, it's pointless to mention it. But I can promise you, it'll be 8 or 16-bit, whatever it is. Same with third, forth, fifth and sixth.

RPGs are my all time favorite. Be it traditional rpgs, wrpgs, trpgs, jrpgs, any kind. Love the genre

Love me some action/adventure games as well, soulsborne games and metroidvanias.

Those be my favs

I tend to like RPGs, strategy games, and 2D action games.  Final Fantasy is my favorite series.  I recently got done playing the Switch version of Final Fantasy Tactics, and now that I have a Switch 2, I've started FF7 Remake, and I'll play FF7 Rebirth when I'm done with that.

RPGs are my favorite, particularly if they are made in Japan. I love all of the FF, DQ, Tales, Persona, Dragon Slayer/Trails, as well as tactical games like Sakura Wars, Valkyria Chronicles, and Fire Emblem. For Western RPGs, I have a “holy trinity” of Cyberpunk, Fallout, and Ultima.

Action adventures are next up overall, but my favorite series of all time, even above RPGs, is The Legend of Zelda.

After that is fighting games, and I actually prefer 3D fighting games like VF, Tekken, SoulCalibur, over 2D fighters.
