As of typing, the all-time player peak sits in the 80-90k region, and it looks to be holding up pretty well so far. At a $40 price tag, however, I’m skeptical whether this game has much of a future— in order for an online-driven gaming experiences to survive, unless you’ve got exceptional WoM, it’s almost required that you offer the lowest bar for entry via F2P or $20USD. Otherwise, the intended audience will stick with what’s familiar to them, whether that be Marvel Rivals, Overwatch, Fortnite, etc.

What do you all think? Does Marathon have a future?

What do you mean by MMO gaming experience? Marathon is an Extraction Shooter. It's in the same space as the likes of Arc Raiders and Escape from Tarkov. Which in that sense, it's the same price as Arc Raiders and actually cheaper than Tarkov.

The intended audience isn't the games you mentioned. It's a hardcore game for those who are dedicated to getting better and better at it. Pretty slow burn overall. I think it'll find a dedicated playerbase, though, because it is REALLY good at what it's intended to be.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

It's a tough hill to climb, but it's climbable. I'm not sure what kind of engagement Bungie/ Sony were hoping for with a game like this. I think if it can get through the first few months, it may be able to build the audience.

I really do think that remakes of the trilogy should've been made alongside this, and used as a means to means to get an audience interested through 3 separate SP releases.

Ah so I did use the label incorrectly lol. Just edited OP. I was trying to convey “this game cannot survive without a strong online community.”

Well it would be good for Marathon if it runs a marathon and not a sprint.

It may be moderately succesfull but is that enough for sony?

I may compare it on Xbox with Helldivers 2. Helldivers 2 was number 6 the week it release of played games. Marathon was number 32 in its first week and has around 13-14% of the players Helldivers 2 had in its first week on Xbox.

To make it even worse, Helldivers 2 still beats Marathon this week by a factor of 2 and even Destiny 2 was still more popular this week.

Another Sony fart fail. Did better than Concord. On PC it looks like it had a rather whelming launch and losing players. It's not DoA but it's not a hit either. On PS5. 18th best selling game.  That's not good.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Has good user reviews on Steam but I guess the look of the game is not for everyone so that many won't touch it even if it seems to be a good game in its genre.
