Forums - Nintendo - The Wii is getting a new game in 2026, including a physical release

Nearly 20 years after its release, Nintendo's vintage 2006 console is seeing a new release this year with shoot-em-up Metal Canary:

You got me really excited with “physical release” and “shoot-‘em-up”, but after watching the gameplay demonstration I will pass.

Still, a very cool decision to print a physical Wii disc in 2026 :)

Thats bananas

Reminds me when 3DS got it's final physical game and it was an awful RPG that is literally 15 min long. Tho I kinda love this as it disrupts the collectors market of those holding onto sealed Just Dance 2020 and Shakedown. No longer the last Wii games lol.

I actually bought Shakedown Hawaii on Wii, though not as a collector's item or to profit from it, just cos I thought it'd be cool to own the last Wii game haha

Oh well, I enjoyed it, so no big deal that it's no longer the "last".

I kinda doubt this will be either, given that this just keeps happening.

Wii.

Vintage.

... why you gotta do me like that?

"You should be banned. Youre clearly flaming the president and even his brother who you know nothing about. Dont be such a partisan hack"

I take it this isn't officially licensed by Nintendo?

Shakedown Hawaii back in 2020 could only release in the EU because Nintendo of America didn't have the equipment anymore to license a new Wii game.

So I'm guessing this isn't an officially licensed title, I wonder how they got the disc to run on unmodified systems...

Edit:

According to a comment on the article the company making the physical version makes reproduction games, they can't be played unless you have a jail broken system. So this isn't a real physical release. Anyone can write a homebrew game to a dvd.

"For those of you who aren't from Brazil... Old Games works with reproduction games, meaning the console needs to be jailbroken..."

To be pedantic, Just Dance 2020 released in 2019. The Wii versions of Shakedown Hawaii and Retro City Rampage were the last two Wii games that released in 2020.

Unlicensed, yes. They are worth discussing, especially years after a console's licensed games end. I do not count them as the last releases for hardware, and I don't think anyone should.
