Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony cancelling PAX East 2020 attendance due to coronavirus concerns

Does this seem like a bit of an overreaction to anyone else? There was a single Coronavirus case reported in Boston, but that was on February 1st, PAX East begins on February 27th. No new cases have been reported in Boston since then, and 26 days is plenty of time for that one guy to fully recover and for symptoms to appear in any people that he interacted with, if he transmitted it to anyone else.

No reaction us big enough to the risk of loosing their best talent going into a new gen. Naughty Dog doesn't grow on trees but if they did it would take a decade or more to grow them and half that again for them to ripen.

Hard to tell who is "concerned" Sony might be hiding their reasons for not going, and those who are concerned that Sony might be hiding why they are not going in this thread (no it isn't).

All I am going to say is that given how quiet Sony has been, they MIGHT have other reasons for not going. Having said that, I also feel like they don't really need to hide anything to begin with however.  We will never know for certain until the next gen consoles are truly shown off.

In any case, I hope everyone stays safe and the virus gets taken care of as soon as possible. Hard to believe Pax would be a red flag area, but you never know these days.

Who said they had to bring actual employees. You do what everybody else does, hire temps and locals to be at your booths. It’s not like it’s anything new they would be showing.

They were going to PAX to show off PS4 content and presumably paid for all the fees related to logistics.

Does that mean they're not milking it ?Now they have a convenient excuse to avoid going to an event where they have less stuff to show than usual.  No company wants to be in that position.

My other points stand.  If you follow business news (as I do) you'll see that all kinds of companies are jumping on this virus to excuse all kinds of things.  It basically buys them all a 3-6 month period where they don't have to account for any kind of underperformance.

Yes. They are cancelling an event to show off PS4 content because they don't want to talk about PS5.

Sure Matt...

That's not what that comment said.  I responded to your mention of PS4 content.

Sorry but this is an over reaction to 1 case lol, Japan as what 30 or so confirmed cases? They are in more danger there lol

I live in Melb, we had what 8 or so cases confirmed. No one here is walking around in masked (other than some asians who do that before the virus anyway). It is like nothing bad has has happened and waiting to kill you around the corner.

So more cancellations.

Wait what??? Sony really eager to have MS hold all the next gen exposure.

Sony said while they won’t attend E3 they will be at “hundreds” of events throughout the year....I’m not seeing that quota being filled at this rate.

No one expected a WW virus at the time either.

Things happen.

Ok I get it it’s bad. It’s barely reported in other countries but that clearly isn’t stopping other companies and the conventions in general. I myself went to a major yearly auto convention last Monday. Life goes on. Now MS gonna keep the hype train rolling with GDC news and Sony still hush hush.

That said I do admire the level of loyalty it takes to be ok with this. I know on some level fans are hungry for the slightest bit of official news.
