Panic button does good work.

PS4s/PS4pro = 1080p/60
Switch docked = 720p/30 (dynamic resolution, between 540p - 720p,  mostly around ~640p)

720p seems kind of unimpressive for this game. Even before the Digital Foundry video I was scratching my head at why people were acting like this was another panic button miracle. When it came out on PS4 it looked pretty ugly as a game, it was basically an Xbox 360 game but with less jaggies and a slightly cleaner image.

That being said, I haven't watched the video yet, and maybe there's been some massive technical upgrades made to it in the last few years. I doubt it though, because it still looks kind of ugly.

It's awesome that they let you adjust settings like SSAO and motion blur--seriously, that's a big con for me with many console games--but it affects resolution instead of frame rate? Odd.

Yet another strong port by Panic Button, they really are the MVP of third party conversions to Switch. This, Doom, Wolfenstein II, and Rocket League all in the space of a year.

Cool to see a console game that gives the player so many options in terms of tweaking the graphical settings, and especially nice to see DF's brief bit on post-patch Wolfenstein II on Switch confirming that its resolution and framerate have indeed improved, though sadly I guess this probably rules out them doing a full analysis on it.

I wouldn't call this particular port a "miracle" myself. Wolfenstein II, now that was a miracle, as it has performance issues even on PS4/Xbox One.

That said, Warframe has undergone significant graphical upgrades since its admittedly rather plain looking 2013 release, and these improvements carry over into the Switch build. And at the end of the day, it's still a game with graphics built to PS4 spec running on a mobile chipset a fraction the size and wattage of a PS4, so its inherently more challenging to port than last gen stuff like Diablo 3 or Skyrim.

This why you should watch the video:p

They literally showed the big upgrades the game got from launch.

I don't see the harm in admitting that I'm not sure if the graphics have been majorly updated whilst giving my opinion on what I remember and have seen recently of the game. Especially considering I've seen the game recently, including in the digital foundry video, and I still wasn't very impressed. It's no where near as drab and boring as the original game, but it isn't impressive either.

Panic Button bringing over Warframe and Rocket League is cooler from a "people get to play these games standpoint" then a "WOW you can play that on Switch?" standpoint, honestly.

It's not really built or optimized for PS4, the actual game came out in early 2013 and it's minimum specs on PC are the kind of thing an Xbox 360 could handle

the miracles of dynamic resolution indeed! still impresive this can run on switch at all, and the thing is they can probably improve it even more

Eh, the game in its current state is quite a bit beyond what 360 could handle, the combined package of stuff like GPU accelerated particles, volumetric lighting, SSR, Bokeh DOF, etc is very much current gen. As I said, I personally do not agree with calling this one a "miracle", but I still think Panic Button did a good job.

The only place the framerate seems to drop is in the hubs where there's a lot of draw calls and NPCs, so it's probable that it's a CPU bottleneck, in which case all the GPU side cutbacks in the world wouldn't help.

That said, every Panic Button game so far has received a post-launch update to improve performance, and apparently the team are already working on improving framerate in the hub area: https://gonintendo.com/stories/323344-warframe-team-looking-into-boosting-performance-in-one-particular

Oh I don't want to come off as harsh, not saying this isn't great. It IS great, especially because it's adding more diversity to Switch's library. As a port however, I'm not extremely impressed, or even that impressed. Compared to Doom and Wolfenstein, it's not the same level, so I get kind of confused when people are so over the top in their praise of Panic Button in this regard. Though then again ... I'm mostly babbling on about other threads at this point, not this one, so I should shut up

We agree I think so I don't take issue with anything you're saying. Except, I will say, it's kind of odd to use those graphics options to show that the game is "quite a bit beyond what the 360 could handle", because I don't think the minimum PC specs could operate with all those features on either, yet it's available in that state. And the original PS4 version wasn't as impressive as this version is either. So it's not as much that the 360 couldn't handle it as it is it wouldn't have the same options.  Though .. that's the same for something like DOOM on Switch as well - a downgrade that doesn't lose the identity of the original game - so that argument kind of doesn't apply overall xD.

Anyways yeah ..... good port. Nothing disagreeable here.

Yeah this definitely isn't on the same level as Doom or Wolfenstein, but still, all I meant was that the version they've ported here is still very much a current gen title in terms of its technical makeup, and they retained all that, so it's not like it would've been a total cakewalk either.

They sound very impressed and rightfully so. I still don't get those who criticize the Switch for not being up to par with PS4 graphically. I believe they are simply hypocrites. A mobile platform should have no right to be able to play PS4 ports with mostly a loss in resolution, textures, and frame rate. The fact that it can, on a platform from 2015 no less, is a small miracle. Your android phones may be more powerful than the Switch, but they also cost twice to three times as much, and guess what, they don't have full console ports!

I'm very impressed. I thought the Switch's upper limit would be improved 360 ports - not feature perfect PS4 ports.

Now, if they could announce The Witcher 2 for it... (Doubt it will happen, don't think it could run The Witcher 3 at anything over 360p).
