Jack Sorenson, head of worldwide studios at THQ, has said he reckons the hardware battle between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo is "irrelevant".

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Sorenson said there's "too much of an emphasis on the sports aspect of who's winning and losing".

"I think [the console war] is totally irrelevant. Even in the history of the business, other than something like the Dreamcast, you can do decent business on lots of platforms," he continued.

"So the issue is not who wins, it's can an independent publisher do a good business on that platform. We're thinking everything from high-end MMO all the way to cell phones."

Just look at THQ's success with the Game Boy Advance, Sorenson said. "There's a ubiquity of gaming out there, and the platform is really just a medium. If that makes sense [we'll publish on] PlayStation 2 next year for something, PS2 two years from now.

"We certainly probably carried on longer on the GBA than most and had a very nice business out there because there're 80, 90 million GBAs out there - maybe a bunch left in closets and drawers, but there's still enough audience to buy them. All these platforms kinda win."

Fair enough, but what would happen to the fanboys if there was nothing left for them to argue over. Its true that all the platforms win though.

He's absolutely right. It's not the 3rd parties fight and as he said, it's about good business (read: profit). So, to put it short, he said that THQ (3rd parties in general, since the same rules applies everyone) goes where the (most) profit is made.

From his perspective, his comments make a lot of sense. He doesn't care who wins, but he does want to know who is winning and where it makes the most sense to put his games. For over a year now, the answer has been the Xbox 360. But that is changing as the PS3 gains momentum and people consider the cost of high end graphics development.

I disagree with your last statement, that may or may not be true, but that is not what he said.

What he said was that as long as 3rd parties can make money on a platform, then they will.  3rd parties going to the platform with the highest profit portential is definitely logical, but not what he was trying to say at all.

How many threads are you going to make? The entire front page is all serious-baby.

I was thinking one step ahead of you. Good business means different things in different contexts. It's good business to keep all the doors open. It's good business to make profit. Most of all, what is good business, is case specific. Is it good business to make 5 million profit with 2 years project, when you can make 5 million profit with 1 year project? No, it's not. Anyway, different games sell diffently on different platforms, mostly due the demographics. Having a good PS3 project propably makes you more profit than a bad Wii project. Not to mention possible multiplatform releases. So, they are going to where they see they can make most profit. 360 have proved itself in online shooters, so the natural choice for them is 360 or 360/PC/PS3. While they go where most of the profit originates, they don't need to ditch anyone.

THQ is funny.  Weren't they bashing the PC for pirating problems in one article not so long ago and getting railed for low sales in another?

Seems like THQ has already fallen asleep at the wheel and steered into the gutter.  Now let's watch and see if they go through the guard rail and over the cliff.
