.... you do realize that you don't actually know at this point that the Switch plays the "full Nintendo ecosystem", right?

While it is not 100% confirmed or been explicitly stated, I'm not a child and can read between the lines.

Merging the handheld & console divisions for both hardware & software in addition to releasing a device that acts as both a handheld & a console makes it pretty obvious that the whole point of Switch it to release a single device that recieves the full software output and functionality of the two previous ecosystems.

So while it is technically possible that Nintendo will release another device that has its own unique features and software library, the chances of that are about .00001%

yet here you are telling others upset about the specs and what that could mean for the switch, and to just wait and see how it plays out, and that they shouldn't be making assumptions. Perhaps you should take your own advice.

Not really, I like to be optimistic and I have a wild imagination, but I'm still able to not buy into what is obviously BS expectations.

I'm now filled with determination.

Hmm??? Where did I tell people that they shouldn't be making assumptions and that they should wait and see how it plays out? Nothing that I have wrote in this thread suggests that one bit.

I said to another poster that being weaker than PS4/XBO does not in and of itself mean 3rd parties will not support it and that the ability to make a profit is what will determine support. That is a fact and we have multiple examples of devices getting alot of 3rd party games despite being weaker than other existing devices.

Your post has literally nothing to do with anything I have said in this conversation and is in no way a rebuttle to my last post.

Like I said, I don't need Nintendo to hold my hand and show me pretty pictures to understand the strategy that they have been building towards for the last few years. The entire point of merging the handheld & console divisions for hardware & software along with creating a device that has the functionality of a handheld & console is clear evidence of what their goals are.

Well, this thread is the very debate that devours the industry and rots it from within.

Your response fits so well with your avatar!

My question is, do you need X1 or PS4 level of power to make Nintendo games? I highly doubt anyone buys a Ninty console to play Fifa or Cod. Every Ninty console I've ever bought was for the joy of playing Mario, Zelda, Star Fox and Donkey Kong games.

Hey guys, I asked this in another thread but I'm gonna ask it here too... =)

Google Pixel C uses Tegra X1 at full speed (1.9GHz on CPU and 1GHz GPU I believe) and doesn't have active cooling. Why is Nintendo using active cooling on Switch if it's Tegra chip is so underclocked? Maybe the rumour is false and there's no active cooling then? Or maybe it's not so severely underclocked?

They would need active cooling for the sake of not throttling even with clocks so low (50% on CPU and 80% on GPU when docked)?

To keep heat down. It's going to be in childrens hands.

Yes, if the X1 is massively underclocked, why does it need a cooling fan? My hands need to know.

The idea it was going to equal even the architecturally-retarted member of current gen consoles was always a farce.
I honestly can't believe that the people arguing otherwise didn't actually themsevles consider that to be highly unlikely.
The ultra fanboy "it could be UBER!" crowd if anything simply "averted their eyes" from a truly critical assessment.

But even by realistic expectations, I do find the end result extremely underwhelming.
The hardware is most comparable to mobile/tablets, yet nobody there would launch new platform with 20nm Maxwell.
When starting a new console gen, it is only prudent to choose the latest available tech, because it needs to last for years.
People equate that option to being more expensive, when CPU arch + fab progression is all about efficiency and power/cost.
Future fab progress involves 3d FinFET, so launching @2d 20nm means future SKUs would need costly redesign.

Nobody is even asking for the REAL latest tech available which is 10nm from NVIDIA partner Samsung (and TSMC).
14 FinFET is currently MAINSTREAM standard, Sony and MS use it after all in much larger chips. (XboneS almost year earlier)
It's not about "equaling Xbone", a modern arch + fab node would allow moderately higher performance + better battery life.
Even using a conservative standard, 20% perf:watt is reasonable to gain from 14nm, likely even while lowering power draw.
So yeah, people are not being given what they would expect from any other electronics vendor in consoles, phones, etc.

Well said. After all the corporate restructuring they did to have one standard system hardware they will never make another separate hardware. If Nintendo releases another gaming system in the future it will probably be just another form factor of Switch, that plays the same games. Maybe that is why Switch version one is so underclocked. It leaves room to easily have Switch version two be way more powerful while basically using the same hardware.

Given what happened with the 3DS and Wii U, I never fully got behind any of these rumors that put the power level really high. It's partly a portable device after all, and needs to balance power with battery life and making sure the thing isn't going to catch on fire from not being cooled enough. 400 Gflops docked is a bit on the lower side, but considering I was going to buy a Switch predominantly for Nintendo software, it doesn't really affect my interest in it much.

Man, this thread just makes me very sad. I am hyped for the Switch, but not for any of the reasons listed in the OP (never have I had those thoughts either). I'm just excited to see what sort of new games will be coming to the system, as well as the hybrid idea. Though it seems overall people seem to be disappointed.
