Sony Explains Discontinuation of PS Vita TV in Japan, Mentions Strong PS4 and PS Vita Sales

Yesterday, we reported that Sony Computer Entertainment is discontinuing shipments of the PS Vita in Japan, and today AV Watch reported a comment by the company on the reason for the decision:

“The role of the PlayStation Vita TV was to let people enjoy easily handheld games on their TV, and to create an opportunity to reconnect with people who distanced themselves from gaming. In the current situation, with strong sales of PS4, and also a strong PS Vita in Japan, it has played its given role.”

Thanks, Dualshockers for the info.

So what do you guys think? It seems like Sony is happy with Vita sales in Japan at least.  If only they would make games for it...oh well. At least the third-party support is still strong and I'll keep supporting it as long as they keep releasing games I want.

Honestly, this thing should just be packaged in with the PS4.

Indeed, could've been a good incentive for people contemplating about getting a ps4 and/or a vita.

That's a shame. I have a Vita TV and enjoyed running games like Tales of Hearts R and Valkyria Chronicles II on it. I hope the Vita version of Trails of Cold Steel II will be Vita-compatible.

They should have done the Vita TV right in the first place. Netflix streaming needed to be turned on. Every Vita game should have been compatible, if if the touch/track pad stuff was hacked in terribly. Fixing Remote Play should have been their top priority. There's terrible amount of input lag between the PS Tv and PS4. I can't even use it to play my PS4 in my room because of that lag. Though, none of that would have helped sales :/

The PS TV could've been a big success. It could have competed with streaming boxes, while having the added benefit of playing Vita games, PS Classics, PS Now, AND being able to remote play PS4 games. Two things held it back. Not only did Sony NOT make sure popular apps, including Netflix, were supported, but they also kept the Vita memory cards. Had they switched over to SD cards and supported those apps, I would have bought it instead of a Roku for my bedroom TV. I'm sure there are plenty out there that feel the same.

If there was one question I wasn't asking, it was "Why did Sony discontinue the PS Vita TV?"

Just saying...

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

They're practically giving it away, anyway. It couldn't hurt.

Well, I supposed it fulfilled half that goal. Honestly, I don't see much of a reason to discontinue it other than they no longer see the purpose of it, or it didn't sell as well as they hoped. Or can you play Vita games on the PS4 now?
