Forums - Gaming - Alex Ward (Criterion co-founder) talks NFS WiiU; EA; Nintendo & his new game

Yup, copied this straight from GAF because I found it really, really interesting.  Pretty horrible situation for them to be in for both their publisher and the platform holder they're developing for to have no interest in the title they were working hard to put out.

When asked about whether his new studio would develop for WiiU:

Following this, obviously, the internet got a little angry at this and took it up with him about the lack of support, to which he delivered some details about what happened with Need for Speed on WiiU (warning, the guy he's talking to is a bit of an idiot):

It is not Nintendo's job to sell a 3rd party games, especially one that is released six months after the versions on other consoles

See how Nintendo handles these things? Maybe now certain people will have more perspective on this matter.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

"Seeing how our families won't eat if we fuck up, we will choose our platforms carefully". Plain cold truth straight ftom a dev.
Perhaps EA did send this game to die, but Nintendo did not give damn either. The suits will be suits, have no loyalty to any company.

I just hope he learned his lesson.
Sure it's easy for people to blame the devs, just as easy as it is for devs to blame the publishers. We can hate on the publishers all we want but we shouldn't forget that the devs were the ones who made the deal with the publishers in the first place.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I did not know it was nintendo's responsibility to market 3rd party games

Thats also what I thought when reading this at gaf yesterday.

Criterion is making a game for EA  EA and Nintendo are not really best friends.  If EA has no interest in making the game a success why would Nintendo?

Give Nintendo the WiiU publishing rights for NFS or dont expect them to do anything at all.

Gundam Clive would make the WIi U a relevant console in Japan.

I've said plenty of times before that the fault doesn't lie just with Nintendo or publishers. Their both got their share. I don't see why Nintendo should bother if EA doesn't though, but the question is why EA didn't bother. You could say because of previous sales, but ME3 was sent out to die, and Fifa 13 much like it, not to mention that Fifa was pretty half assed.

What he sais is right though. I can hardly find Wii U third party games on store shelves. You're never going to be able to sell anything without anything to sell, so I can see his frustration... :P

Port begging is becoming really annoying fgs. If a publisher or developer doesn't want to put their game on a system that is their choice and they have their reasons.
