Forums - Sony - Playstation 4 Blocking Used Games: "Up to the Publisher"

wtf Sony. Hope this isn't true.

Online passes and whatnot, I assume.

How would they block used games? The publishers that is. Sell an online pass, sure, that is expected but what else can they do?

PS3 has the ability to tell if a disc has been played on another console or not. They could potentially include the same technology and publishers could do that check each time you boot the disc up.

Or other possibilities. I'm gonna call BS on this though, none of these companies are dumb enough to block used games.

Interesting. 3rd party devs will show their true colors then.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I thought Sony said they werent going to block used games?

Don't be too sure. Capcom actually did it on the 3DS with Resident Evil: Mercenaries

Kinda passing the buck in case of any repercussions I suppose.

I can see the sense in doing this. If it all goes badly with the public then between the developers and Sony the whole thing can be terminated.

Still don't like it though.

so if it is up to the publisher and sony said no that at least means sony won't block their games. i don't think we'll see used games blocked on ps4 in general at least. still don't believe the MS rumors either.

"Now, this could mean two things. One, that publishers are obviously free to step up their existing online pass strategies to block more – or possibly all – game content from those who buy a pre-owned game without a code.

The second option is that Sony HAS incorporated tech into the PS4 that allows publishers to distinguish between new and pre-owned games. It’s then up to them if they choose to utilise it."

That's a pretty scary idea.
