Forums - PC Discussion - Another MMO goes free-to-play -- this time Bluehole's TERA

Tagged games:

Another subscription-based MMO has made the switch to free-to-play. This time it's last year's TERA -- although subscriptions will still be offered to those players who want to pay monthly.

Developed by South Korean company Bluehole Studio, the game launched in Korea at the start of 2011, and found its way to the U.S. and Europe in May last year, thanks to publishing deals from En Masse Entertainment and Gameforge.

However, from February TERA players will be able to choose whether the subscription solution suits their needs or not, as a free-to-play alternative called TERA: Rising will launch.

Rising provides an in-game store and options for customizing play characters, and there's no level cap or content restrictions.

Those players who choose to pay $14.99 a month for "elite status" will receive extra dungeon rewards, 10 bonus quests every day, extra items and boosts, store discounts and numerous other additions.

TERA isn't the first subscription MMO to go free-to-play, and it doesn't look like it'll be the last either. Most recently, Electronic Arts' Star Wars: The Old Republic fell on hard times, and was forced to go free-to-play.

Lol I posted a few threads I think before ;o

Anyways the old days of subscription paid MMOs is coming to a end soon.

The rumors of Blizzard eliminating WoW is getting str0nger. I wonder if their new MMO Titan (I think it was called) will have a subscription.

I don't think they'll kill WoW with still what? 8 million plus subscribers... unless blizzard gives everyone who goes from WoW to their new MMO benefits when transferring..

but is gonna be interesting to see what will happen with MMOs.. flat subscription fee is going out but they can't survive on in game purchases alone..
I think they will go free to play untill a certain level and then actually p2p based on gametime like 5 bucks for 10 hours and 10 for 25hours

You are better off not playing any MMO (p2p or f2p), once you get in a MMO, it is difficult to get out. Took me a while but I am finally out of a MMORPG since May 2012 l0l.

Edit: It ruined me to a point where I quit actual gaming and watching anime for 2 years (2008-2010).

SWTOR and TERA are the 2 best MMO's in the market in my opinion. I am pleased they both got more profitable models that can garantee support for the coming years.

With that said, i am also keeping an eye out for FFXIV AAR. :)

Anybody else playing TERA?

I love the combat system but i stoped playing TERA cause its way too addicting, especially with the annoying enchanting system. With that said, i do miss it. Unfortunely i cant get other people to play it because they get too bored with the questing system to get to max level.

This game deserves to be on consoles alot more than FFXIV ARR and TESO. It lends itself really well to gamepad controls. Actually, i used a gamepad to play it on the PC. It feels great.
