This is an article I agree with that I feel needs some discussion. I don't have a problem with games being on a platform, even if it is the same game. But, there is nothing that brings value into buying both verisons of the same game on two differnet platforms (PS3/PSV), at least in my opinion. Having games is always great, but I feel that they should at least bring something new or at least provide some value in buying both versions. Feel free to disagree with me on this as I could be wrong on this. The rest is from the article:

One of the biggest marketing focuses for the Playstation Vita is, and has been, cross platform play. But is this the right aspect Sony should be focusing on with its powerful new handheld? Putting a majority of their attention on cross platform play may take away the potential for more unique 1st party Sony exclusive experiences.

I will give a few examples.

Some games like MLB12 are ok to focus on cross platform play because at its core its not intended to be a unique experience, but rather a handheld version of its console bigger brother. But other games, like the recently released Sly Cooper, become nothing more then a handheld version of a ps3 game with a few touch screen features tacked on. Instead of creating a separate and potentially unique game for the vita, we essentially have an identical game on two separate consoles. Do not get me wrong, this is not a bad thing, but in the end I would much rather see more unique game experiences built for the vita instead of several ps3 games accommodated for the vita experience.

“Lets hope we see more unique games like this announced at E3″

I understand we have some great unique exclusive titles for the vita around the corner, like gravity rush and Sound shapes, but I want more of these experiences.

It is not a bad thing that all of these potentially great high quality, high budget games are being made for the Vita as near identical Vita experiences, as long as Sony focuses on budgeting and encouraging unique Vita only games as well. If Sony makes the focus on creating the ps3 experience on the go over diverse games built from the ground up for the Vita, then the costumers may be left wanting so much more.

“Would you rather have a near identical game to the Ps3 or something completely unique?”

What are your opinions on cross platform play? Yes, I really like being able to play a game on my ps3 and then continue that same game on the go, but only if there are plenty of games that offer an experience unique only to the Vita, or else what is the point of having a Vita other then playing your Ps3 games on the go? Again, not a bad thing, but the device has so much potential with the amount of power behind it (for a handheld) and its unique front and rear touch controls that I do not want to see it all go to waste.

I think your reading too much into it, its a feature that is extremely easy for devs that are already making multi platform games to support. Online user title storage is something the PS3 has always supported so for a lot of devs its not even a new feature. Same goes for cross platform play once youve written your PSN login code and match making code its the same for both systems, its cheap wins and a big tick for the back of the box.

Of course Vita needs its own experiences and it will get them, it already has exclusive games and there are plenty more coming.

I think Sony is relying too heavily in too much time without Monster Hunter in japan

you're making the assumption there.  Now no one (to my knowledge) has done it yet but at it was discussed before vita released with transfarring and such buying the game for either platform could allow you to play it on both with a unified save file.  this gives me the consumer a fantastic option to play it on the big screen i have at home or take it on the road when i'm on vacation or whatever.

to me (i travel ~10-15 weeks a year for work) this is a fan-fucking-tastic feature.

now if it is a direct port sold seperately.  well, i of course will not be buying it twice nor would i recommend anyone else to.  but just like it makes sense to port ps3 games to the 360 it probably makes sense for devs to port them to vita too (as long as the porting is cheap which seems to be true).  maximize potential audience.

choice.  it's a good thing.  ...even if it is sony.

so cross platform play means they can't use the controls..

not playing your home console games on the go is like not using 3D on your 3DS what would be the point?

and if they put home console games on the console it can no longer get platform exclusive ones either...

dude, WTF are you talking about

seriously can we have a new forum rule that Nintendo fans can't make Vita related treads anymore, this is painful, atleast for like the remainder of the first two years

So because Zanzaru games is already in the process of making Sly 4 for PS3 and realizes that it take little to no effort to also port it to Vita for a day and date release on both platforms hurts them how?

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

It is two sides of a coin really a unique title would be gr8, but the whole play it at home and then continue playing on the move sounds fantastic too.

Monster Hunter is not the be all and end all. Get a grip.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

It's very important. Check this week's sales. The only PSP game charted that is 1 month old (and it's way older than that). Games that spark and leave soon after are not what Vita really needs right now.
