Forums - Gaming Discussion - 3DS getting flood of ports from the unreleased Vita, said "one analyst"

PlayStation Vita has yet to launch, but it's got one major advantage over Nintendo's 3DS: a second analog stick. According to EA labels head Frank Gibeau, Sony's portable could have a "better chance" in the market, but rumors are pointing towards Nintendo taking action to de-emphasize 3D and add another analog. If this happens, be prepared for a flood of Vita ports on 3DS, says one analyst.

"The days of publishers developing a single game for multiple technologically differentiating platforms are over," observed EEDAR's Jesse Divnich to IndustryGamers. "Madden NFL 09 for example was developed for the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox, Wii, Nintendo DS and PSP, all of which required at least 4 different internal teams. If the 3DS rumors are true and Nintendo plans to add a second analog stick, it would at least group the Vita and 3DS into the same category. While the technological differences would require additional development resources, more so than when an Xbox 360 title is ported to the PS3 (or vice versa), adding a second analog stick to the 3DS at least make game porting between itself and the Vita possible."

Wouldn't it be great to play dual analog games like Call of Duty on either portable?

Divnich also noted that this is likely the beginning of a trend. While the Wii was hugely successful because it was so differentiated from the competition, it also meant publishers (mostly) struggled on the platform.

"I believe that hardware platforms that attempt to substantially differentiate themselves from their competitors will no longer occur either (e.g. the Wii vs. PS3)," continued Divnich. "There is certainly a shared benefit that both Microsoft and Sony receive from their home platforms having similar technological capabilities. I believe the same shared benefit can be realized by Sony and Nintendo if their portable platforms were more closely aligned."

"How Nintendo would roll this out, or whether these rumors are even true, is yet to be known. But if the rumors are true, I don’t foresee Nintendo having much difficulty getting consumer adoption of a new component. As we've seen with the Wii, Nintendo was able to integrate the Wii MotionPlus rather smoothly by including it into the Wii Sports Resort game package and this was achieved even though the Nintendo Wii had a rather large installed base at the time. The 3DS is still in its infancy and has a much smaller installed base. It certainly can be done."

Frankly, if Nintendo can successfully market and sell an add-on that makes 3DS work effectively with a second analog, we'd be all for it. In fact, it might even help publishers and both dedicated portables in the long run as they face continued pressure from smartphones.

Hmm it was already said by quite a few developers that PSV version can be made really fast from HD versions so issue of porting it to 3DS still remains.

ports?

I was under the impression that the power behind the 2 handhelds made it easier to port a game from PS3 to PSV than exactly from PSV to 3DS. Are they going to increast the specs of the 3DS and I didn't know about it?

I doubt that will be possible in (at least) any AAA title, maybe in some lower budget games that could happen, and then there's the whole dual screen situation setting apart the Vita and the 3DS.

"...if Nintendo can successfully market and sell an add-on that makes 3DS work effectively with a second analog.."
How should that add-on look like? It would be a completly new 3DS, if at all.
Ah, i don't know. Perhaps a new pro-3DS with 2 sticks, 3D and better battery life for 249$.
I still doubt that they split the market with this 2 sticks-vita-copy-paste-3DS.

There's a ton of ridiculous Vita publicity lately, and this is obviously ignoring one major factor, 3DS has more games announced for it.

Looks like we can look forward to a whole year of this.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I think the graphical jump is too much for ports to be effective... they tried this with PSP and DS and it didn't really ever benefit either console and the games all bombed pretty hard.

Even with two analogue sticks there's still a big difference in interface to overcome, dual screen vs one big touch with rear touch pad etc.

Really doubt it but it could happen, nothing has been announced for both yet though beyond the typical EAsports and movie tie-ins though?

Dual analog is kind of needed for 3D games, too many limitations and complications without it. I still dont understand why Nintendo didnt put 2 from the get go.

You can't port from the younger platform. That makes no sense whatsoever...

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

if they took this approach then that would mean the devs would scale back and start developing games on 3ds hardware THEN PORT IT to vita

AKA every 3rd party Vita game would get a sloppy 3ds port

i want VITA DEVELOPED GAMES for PS Vita NOT 3ds developed games for PS Vita

just another way to hold PS Vita back..

if they did this i would think i would start to grow a disliking towards Nintendo..

but most likely this wont happen(hopefully)..idk maybe im thinking to hard about all of this..

Why is it all of a sudden Nintendo’s fault if developers chose to go that way?

And even if EA says this, this is mostly just BS they will not do it even if there is an extra stick. I don’t even get why they need an extra team if there is no extra stick.
