Samsung Electronics has retained its unrivaled leadership in 3D TV both in North America and Europe where TV makers compete fiercely.

According to a market research firm, Gfk, Samsung kept its overwhelming No.1 position in LCD TV, capturing 31.9 percent market share in May alone, and 30.8 percent cumulative market share from January to May as well.

In particular, Samsung took the largest market share in LCD TVs 40-inches and larger as well as premium TVs such as full HD LCD TVs—widening its market share gap with a distant second by more than 20 percentage points.

In LCD TVs 40-inches and larger, Samsung took 39.4 percent value market share, in May alone, and 37.3 percent cumulative share for the past five months. In full HD LCD TVs 40-inches and larger, the company captured 39.5 percent in May and 37.3 percent from January to May respectively.

Samsung has also demonstrated its unrivaled strong leadership in 3D TV in Europe with 50.5 percent in value in May and 45.4 percent from January to May.

Samsung’s 3D TV market share in North America recorded a staggering 58.4 percent in May as well, positioning itself as the most loved 3D TV brand both in North America and in Europe.

Meanwhile, active 3D TV brands—Samsung, Sony, Panasonic—dominate 81.5 percent of the 3D TV market in Europe in May

I really don't understand this.  I know two people with SONY 3D Tvs and ZERO people with samsung 3dtvs.

sony was the 1st company to release 3dtvs right?

How could they have fallen this far behind in such a short amount of time??

What do you guys think?

These percentages are meaningless. What proportion of TVs sold today are 3D TVs? If it's very small it doesn't matter who is "winning", they're all probably losing money on R&D vs sales at this point.

I still don't believe 3D will ever become maintsream, unless they can somehow create one that doesn't use glasses. I assume that would be difficult because of their is no way to determine where people will be and what angle they will be viewing from. It would also be difficult to produce 3D without glasses, because the majority of TV's are used by multiple people at the same time.

And no I don't think Sony was first to release 3D TVs. I just think they promoted the most.

They probably were never the leaders in 3D, so I don't they 'fell' from any where.

And this is only for the month of May right? Who knows how often sales fluctuate throughout the year

Samsung was the first company to release 3D TVs.. sony released there's 6-8 months later...

I dunno what percentage 3dtvs make but that's not the point.

Sony has been pushing 3dtvs HARD....especially with the free ps3 giveaways.   Apparantly, it isn't working.

Actually, they already exist.

And how do you know this. Sure, Sony has a relatively small marketshare, but how do you know their marketshare wasn't even smaller before they started their promotion. How do you their promotion wasn't greatly beneficial to them?

Besides this is one month out of the year. Who knows, maybe Samsung had a deal going on for the month. How have sales been for the entire year?

Simple mathematical logic - equation below

sales prove samsumg 3dtvs > FREE ps3 + 3d bravia

As I stated already, being outsold by a competitor for one month doesn't mean anything.
