I still don't believe 3D will ever become maintsream, unless they can somehow create one that doesn't use glasses. I assume that would be difficult because of their is no way to determine where people will be and what angle they will be viewing from. It would also be difficult to produce 3D without glasses, because the majority of TV's are used by multiple people at the same time.
And no I don't think Sony was first to release 3D TVs. I just think they promoted the most.
They probably were never the leaders in 3D, so I don't they 'fell' from any where.
And this is only for the month of May right? Who knows how often sales fluctuate throughout the year
