Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reflecting on the Wii U name

Just like Iwata said during the conference, I'm starting to see why they named it Wii U. While they talked yesterday about the new console, I was thinking to myself they should drop Wii off the name. Afterwards a similar situation to the 3DS came up, with some people confusing it as a new controller for the Wii.

But you heard it during the conference, the aim of the console is to unite the casual and the core in one platform. So why call it Wii U? Nintendo says the Wii to be casual, so they make the new platform compatible to all Wii controllers. What about core? That's you, in control, doesn't intimidate, use inventories, remove huds, hone attention skills. In conclusion, one side you have the casual Wii multiplayer fun you've known this past years, then you have the single player U control for the core to enjoy*.

The problem is, there isn't a core or casual market, we are all gamers and want software to entertain us; and that is what WiiU is trying to accomplish, blur the lines between "core" and "casual", between "motion" and "standard", between "We" and "You".

*: must be the reason why there is only a single U controller, I want co-op...
