Forums - Sales Discussion - Its time to admit it. PS3 will NEVER overtake 360.

@ Hyruken

I gave up reading your post when you said that MS had basically done nothing when and since the PS3 Slim launch.  You do realise that the 360 Elite got a $100 price-cut right along the PS3, right?  The Pro also got a $50 price-cut to clear out stock.  So, you had a $199 Arcade, a $249 Pro, and a $299 Elite.  And yet, it wasn't able to beat out a system who's lowest entry price was $299.  So, I'll ask you the same thing I asked in the previous paragraph.  What do you think is going to happen when the PS3 hits $199?  Heck, even $249?

And look who it is....

Firstly your 100% right about the cuts. So what were the price of the elites before the massive $50 drop? Also in your analysis of the figures you forgot to mention a pretty big price change, the Arcade was given a £30 ($45) INCREASE. Why did you forget to mention that bit i wonder.....

As for the rest of what you said nostradamus when will we be seeing this $100 price cut you claim? Or to put that into some numbers for you that is 33% off of the current price. Seeing as Sony themselves only a few weeks ago said they have finally made profit on each PS3 do you really think they would give up 1/3 of the money they get from each PS3?

Do anyone else agree with him that there will be a $199 ps3 anytime soon?

Until that happens we will never know so i can't say. I imagine it would go on to do very well just like it has since it's last price cut. But it won't happen anytime soon, in that time the 360 will be increasing it's lead over the PS3. I think it is that point you seemed to have missed. maybe you should have read the rest of it rather then once more going on one of your little crusades :)

Are we really basing this on just 2 weeks of the 360 Slim being releaseed in America, it's STRONGEST region?  And with price-cuts and a new model in Japan, it was only able to net 17K (still came in last place, as well).  Within a few weeks, it will be back to ~ 4-6K.  And I'll be surprised if the 360 sells well over 100K when it launches in EMEAA.  ~80K would be my guess.  In America, sales will definitely stay strong for a few weeks, but they will eventually drop.  Of course, it will be slightly above previous numbers when they do.  You also need to recognize that PS3 sales didn't drop because of the new Slim.  So, 360 has not killed PS3 in America.

To those who honestly think PS3 will not pass 360, what do you think is going to happen in EMEAA when GT5 launches?  Or more importantly, when PS3 FINALLY has a $199 SKU?  The PS3 will pass 360.  Of course, it won't be because of America, but because of Japan and EMEAA.  Though, on second thought, I bet a $199 PS3 will outsell the 360 even in America.

A $199 PS3 is at least 2 years out.  By that time the 360 would be $99.  The PS3 isn't going to outsell the 360 over the lifetime.  They will just keep swapping momentum with price cuts, redesigns, added features, game releases, etc.

I don't support the OPs rationale, but I do support his conclusion for different reasons.

You are also forgetting Kinect and Move.  We are more core/hardcore gamers so we can't possibly foresee the impact those peripherals will have with non-gamers and casuals.

Also, EU is far from the Sony stronghold it once was.  It took them all this time to finally pass the 360 in European sales even when MS had a much weaker presence there.  Some EU countries are just as big of 360 strongholds as the US.I don't doubt that GT5 will help boost PS3 sales for a few weeks after release.

Why do you think Kinect is going to have such a massive effect on 360 hardware?

Massive hype.

MS are awesome at advertising.

Even more casual friendly than the Wii.

Justin Beiber... lol

MS advertising and massive hype dont always work - look at Alan Wake

I think the Wii already has the casual crowd sewn up so move/kinect wont make a big dent.

This is not an exit.

Doom and Gloom already?

It has been 2 weeks!  Lets just see how long the current bump lasts.  We can see just how much of the sales are clearance/new boxes and how well the demand can continue.  Also, we have no idea if the $299S or the possible $199 arcade will remain at those prices (once current stock is gone and the Arcade is released) or if they will go to the other model (249/149) or hell even the ACTUAL PRICE OF NATAL!

And hell, we still dont know what Sony is doing.  They have those 2 "skus" that might be many different things (plus) they have said recently they want to start bundling big time w/games.  Hell, why not wait for the gloom speech until they actually get supply in NA to meet demand?

Either way, it will be one very close and exciting Holiday Season, regardless of what system you want to win.

Personally, I think it will all come down to when you PERSONALLY decide to announce the Gen Over, as to who will win 2nd place (and thus be the first loser after being trounced by the Wii)

As someone else mentioned in here just because a console finishes 3rd does not make it bad, just because something is in 3rd place does not mean nobody will want it. It is this eliteism attitude which irritates me. Like for example i own all three consoles. In sales Wii is miles out in front. But of the three consoles it is the one i play the least. If i look at the games i have bought over the past 6 months the vast majority have been on PS3. The fact i play my PS3 more these day's does not mean it is better then my 360. It just means at that period in time i have more games suited to my taste on it right now. Soon as Halo,Gears,Fable,Crackdown etc come out then i will play 360 again. Point being that even if the PS3 managed to go on to sell 3 billion units it would not change the amount of enjoyment i get out of it. Too many people on this website or in general take a console's sales position way too seriously. This gen will be remembered for the games we played, not where each one finished.

Yeah it is over for 2nd place for PS3.

But lets be honest. Sony made a damn good attempt.

There just isn't an answer to Kinect and 360s. Especially considering 360s is the same price as PS3 Slim. And it would appear that it's the 360s selling and not the pricecut models due to rise in availability and rise in sales of 360.

EU numbers should be awesome to on July 17th week.

My city is into taking preorders for the 2nd shipment. As the first is all preordered up.

I believe Kinect will sell well because it's like nothing anyone has used before, like the Wii, it has that advantage.

I still don't get why it's already clear that 2nd place isn't possible for Sony. There were also a lot people who thought that last year, and look back what happened.

As I said: Europe/Others is the deciding factor. Another price cut for the PS3 and things will be different again.

Furthermore: We only have 1st and 2nd week number for 360 in America. There has actually never been a chance for the PS3 to overtake it there. Europe's 1st week numbers will definitly amazing for X360, but don't expect too much in the following weeks.

I don't see Sony being 2nd place at the end of this gen myself (because Kinect has just more casual appeal), but it is definitly not impossible.

Price cut and GT5. Fair enough as an answer?

PS3 won't be getting a price cut.  360 might, though.
