The 3D effect on 3DS wasn't much of a selling point. It didn't add too much to the cost of the hardware, but it wasn't hooking people as Nintendo hoped.
Wii U's GamePad was a big miscalculation. It added greatly to the cost of the console and never reached its potential. Nintendo planned to offer support for up to two GamePads on a console at once and that simply never happened.
3DS and Wii U struck me and many others as adding those features just for the sake of being new. DS and Wii felt very purposeful with their features.
Any gimmicks Nintendo can add to the controller or console recently or in the future is a big gamble. If they add VR, it should probably be an add-on and not forced into the console itself to drive up the cost.
Switch 2 is only a year and some change right now, but there's a possibility in the long run the mouse controls are viewed as an unfulfilling optional gimmick in using the console.
