My time is also limited for gaming, but I made this decision to focus only on Nintendo all the way back in the Wii era.

Due to the lack of time you just concentrate on the few games you can play a year, and even that is a stretch sometimes as you can't fully commit to one (specially long ones) needing to skip to the next one.

Hardware has never been a deciding factor for me, performance yes. Nintendo games peform perfectly, and third parties have the new VRR TV feature just added which should help quite a bit with the unlocked fps games.
* Does Nintendo actually offer enough variety in terms of genres, or is it still fair to say that the platform is heavily focused on platformers and its traditional first-party franchises?
Most varied but for my taste. I prefer puzzle strategy games, with a side of action adventure. Nintendo fill those plentily. Just have a look at all the released Switch games up to now to give you an idea on what could come with Switch 2.
* If I completely gave up PlayStation, would I end up missing a significant number of games that I would normally play on PS5?
More and more third parties are starting to release on Switch 2. See the recent Stellar Blade PS5 exclusive for example.
* Given that I now have much less time to play, could Nintendo actually be a better fit for me than PlayStation?
With less time you start to focus on games you can play in small sessions and a handheld is ideal for that. Also having it portable can help you manage your gaming better in that respect as you are not limited to the TV.
* Most importantly, can Switch 2 genuinely work as a complete, standalone platform, or is it still primarily a console that makes the most sense alongside a PS5/Xbox/PC?
Even the WiiU did that for me, but this is highly subjective.
