I’m 200 pages in and currently like it (Children of Time). But I was a bit cautious about it since it’s so highly recommended. Last time I read highly recommended SF was Alistair Reynolds: Revelation Space, Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap.
I have so many complaints about those books but while RS and RAs most defining features are that they are forgettable AG was god damn awful. Only thing I will say here about those books is that I was told they are ”hard” SF, but the amount of hand waving things away in them makes them as much SF as Star Wars.
And this comes from someone that, to be completely honest, loves pulp fiction SF. A series that is a bit newer, that I really liked is Jack McDevitts Academy Books (Engines of God is the first book, really good one). The series book wary wildly in how good they are. And they are in no way high literature and have the cozy pulp fiction feeling to them.
If we want some higher literature I can recommend Klara and the Sun. SF written by a literature Nobel prize winner (not for this book tough).
