I think it's okay for an IP to have different expressions, Star Fox in Mario probably is not what Starfox is in a standalone movie, which would be slightly different from Starfox in his own game as well. I mean The Mario movie in itself bastardises the Mario IP to some extent lol.
I dont see it impacting the success of the game though although I get why you don't love it. Fundementally it looks great still. I think a 10 year old would still be hugely excited by these graphics and characterisations. Nostalgic/mature fans too.
