My guess at the moment, based on SNY saying not so long ago that they had RAM secured for at least a year so price increases shouldn't be a worry for quite a while, along with just how much the prices increased and so soon, is that SNY is actually doing 1 of 2 things.

1. Extending the gen to 2030 ish and making room for a cheaper hardware tier, for a 26/27 PS5 hybrid, at $399-$499.
or
2. Sacrificing some late gen PS5 sales to get a better idea of how much they can, or should, price the 27/28 PS6 hybrid and console. ($499 & $749 ?)

Seems to me that they want to start covering the costs of RAM supply after the allotment they got. This is a long term problem that may only get worse.

This would fall under #2.

RAM doesn't really make sense based on what SNY said prior for prices to go up so much so fast. Now if SNY believes RAM is going to become a considerable problem in the future however, based on how strong PS5 sales have been in general, it wouldn't be the worst move business wise to bump the prices up now. This way you get people used to and as comfortable with those prices as they can be, in advance for PS6 and how much it will likely cost. XB Series prices have been sky high for a while, and rumors are XB Helix is going to be $1000-$1500, so SNY has a bunch of excuses to fall back on for this price hike, even if they're only partially/slightly true.

If future RAM prices become a problem for SNY, they will have already made a bunch more money up front from all the console sales from now until then, assuming PS5 sales don't tank. If RAM prices don't end up as much of a problem in the future, then that's just more PS5 profits. If RAM prices unexpectedly drop quickly, then it's just all money in the bank, plus PS6 could look cheap at launch depending on how SNY priced it, leading to a strong start next gen.
