Wii U deserved it but Vita was amazing hardware. Just lacked the strategic support from Sony. Ultimately though it reflected the reality of software development and the direction of the industry. Dedicated handheld software makes sense when its extremely cheap. Once you surpass PS2 level quality it begins to become unsustainable next to home console development.

Hardware dont make a console deserving or not. By your analogy, switch should’ve also failed, because hardware wise it was weaker than the competitors.  Wii U failed for same reason Vita failed, not good support and overall strategy for game development and releases.

For me Switch's hardware is brilliant and partly reflected in its success.

Good hardware is not solely about power, for me it's about purpose. And the Wii U was ill conceived in my opinion.

Vita however could of been the great last hurrah to dedicated handhelds if Sony made some late gen PS3 games for the system (Ratchet and Clank Bootys Quest, God of War Ascension, Puppeteer) and secured good third party support (Final Fantasy Type 0, Monster Hunter).
