Like the others said, the only ones who care about these records are the fans. Remember, Nintendo, Sony, & MS are publicly-traded corporations. They and their investors care more about profits than they do about bragging rights. A last-generation machine narrowly beating a record set by a 25-year-old console probably isn't going to increase share prices.

Nintendo already set a new personal best with the Switch. It's one of only three consoles ever to surpass 150M, and the #4 spot didn't even hit 120M. It set new software records. First-party Switch games had sales volumes and attach rates that are among the highest in the console market, with more games selling over 20M than any other system in history. There's already been over 1.45B software units shipped for it, crushing Nintendo's previous record of 948.76M software units on the DS. And Nintendo made a shitload of money from all of that. I'm sure the executives and shareholders are more than satisfied regardless of what side of 160M the Switch ends on.
