Yeah, the A1200 was too little, too late. Software support for AGA games was a big question mark back then, only a fraction of Amiga games used the new graphic chipset and not every AGA game was available both for A1200 and Amiga CD32. The A600 a few months earlier also was a confusing model... not better and not cheaper than a good old A500 (or A500+) and a lot worse than the A1200. |
The problem was that Commodore was sitting on their laurels and didn't upgrade the graphics for way too long. AGA was constantly pushed backwards so much so that when it finally came out it was already somewhat outdated.
Had they not forced to release the ECS in between (thus pulling even more ressources from the AGA team), AGA could have released 2 years earlier and would have been great for it's time, but not in 1992 anymore it wouldn't.
For the record, I didn't own an Amiga at it's prime, I inherited one (Amiga 600HD) in 1997 when commodore was already dead , and it burned itself to death when it short-circuited itself in 2004, so my memories of Amiga are probably not as vast as yours but I'm still fond I was able to experience it, even if a bit late.
