I think Playstation is in serious danger of becoming a very old-fart type of brand where it's a bunch of 35-45 year olds. They're not "old" in a cool way anymore. I know there are things like Statista that try to estimate the age of the PS userbase but I don't think there are any official numbers, and I don't think Sony wants to release those numbers.

The average kid who was 20 when the PS2 came out, that core of their audience is like 45 years old today. Even if you were 25 when the PS4 launched, you're 37 now (!)

Nintendo has a better balance in this respect because they continue to get a ton of kids every gen so they always have a younger upswing of users coming in constantly but they've gained massive traction in retaining older players too. Nintendo is no longer "uncool" and the pop culture headwinds of the 2000s are completely over. I think also this is why Sony is suddenly try to push things like Astro Bot and LEGO Horizon, I think they are concerned that while they have a reliable base of consumers, it's mainly an aging base that becoming a bunch of "dad gamers".

So much cringe you trying to build stereotypes to fit your narrative.

There are young Playstation gamers and old PlayStation gamers. Some of them are "cool", others aren't... and that has nothing to do with their age.

There are young Nintendo gamers and old Nintendo gamers. Some of them are "cool", others aren't... and that has nothing to do with their age.

Yet Sony fans spew endless stereotypes about Nintendo fans ("they'll get a Playstation eventually because  they have to once they get older" .... uh says who? It ain't 2004 anymore).

So if you don't like the shoe being on the other foot for a change, that's not really my problem. Demographics of this era probably favor Nintendo, whereas the headwinds used to be behind Sony in the 2000s. Nintendo has a good mix of virtual ownership of the family market of console gaming which ensures a non-stop infusion of younger generations, but they've also hit paydirt and gained massive traction in retaining their fanbase as it gets older too. If anything the more fanatical part of the fanbase is now older gamers. It's why they can sell 6 million systems at $500+ (more or less) without much fuss these days.

I think Sony is well aware of the things that I'm talking about too, the PS2-PS3-PS4 gamer who even started in their early 20s is getting ooooooold. Young kids are not as Playstation centric as past generations, they like smartphones, they like Switch, they like Steam, Playstation doesn't rule the roost of the world for a lot of this coming generation of consumers. This probably why Sony is looking more into multiplatform, pushing games like Astro Bot and LEGO Horizon all of the sudden, etc. etc. Likely they even have more and more Switch 2 games eventually.
