First off, I've been a Nintendo fan since SMB 1, and I literally own every console they ever released. So this notion that only non-fans are complaining can be officially retired, because I am proof that it's not true. Second, I find it humorous that when it comes to outselling the PS2, the Switch is definitely the same thing. But when it comes to comparing its internals? Oh, suddenly it's a handheld and a different product and unfair to compare! Here is the thing. Nintendo had a choice to make a home console that could actually run GTA 6 without compromise, as well as every other AAA game that might like to come over to their platform. They chose not to. So now, as a consumer, I have no choice but to take that into consideration. Because at the end of the day, if all I own is a Switch 2, I'm stuck with gimped versions of certain games, or no versions at all, and I don't like that... and frankly, neither should anyone else. We are gamers, right? Meaning we are suppose to like games? Well, if you like games outside of Nintendo's IPs, you're going to need to spend like a grand now, because that Switch 2 is not going to cut it by itself... because again... Nintendo wanted handheld. |
There is no intellectual dishonesty when it comes to the Switch outselling the PS2, and you know it. People don't compare Switch sales to PS2 because they claim the Switch is a home console, they compare it to the PS2 because the PS2 is the best selling console (home or handheld) of all time. What else are we supposed to compare it to? Switch was also compared to DS sales. So there is absolutely no argument to be made here, unless it's the stupid notion that "handhelds sell better than home consoles, thus Switch outselling PS2 doesn't count".
Sure, Nintendo had the choice to become the fourth platform / ecosystem to play GTA VI on, kill their business model in the process and design their future around a tiny minority of vocal hardcore gamers. Thankfully, they didn't make that choice, as 150 million people thought it was a great idea to make a hybrid console. The last time Nintendo released a traditional home console with a focus on graphics power was in 2001 with the Gamecube. So why are you acting shocked they didn't announce a PS5 competitor? You had almost 25 years (a quarter of a century) to adjust to this. According to your profile you are 35 years old - that's almost all your life! How many people who like handhelds complain about Sony not abandoning the PS5 and focusing solely on a new handheld?
Yes, we are gamers, and the vast majority of us don't care about having the best graphics or the most powerful system. Neither Nintendo, nor Sony players. They didn't care with the PS1 and PS2, they didn't care with the Wii, they didn't care with the DS and 3DS and the Switch and most gamers don't have an incredibly powerful gaming PC. Neither do the millions of people who still play on a PS4 or Xbox One. And yeah, if you like Sony and Nintendo games you will have to buy both consoles! Shocker! It's been that way forever. Since the dawn of the gaming industry you had to buy multiple consoles to play all the games.
Thus, the only humorous thing here is the brain-dead "Nintendo's console is weaker than Sony's!" discussion that we've had since 2007 when I created my VGChartz account. It's the same stuff every generation. Except this time, the Nintendo console will even be getting the vast majority of third party games, so the goalposts have to be moved to accommodate for that fact.
