They did a great transition with the Forgotten Land, but I disagree on the "need to stay 3D" considering the pedigree of the series being almost entirely in 2D/2.5D before.
Not only that but considering the rumors for the Kirby Planet Robobot remaster, it ain't the last time you'll the pink guy in a 2D platformer.
