True. But when your direct competitor (that trails in console sales by quite a margin even in the US) charges 450 for a digital series X, Why should you bother charging any lower? Being the market leader and all.

To get more people in and faster. People buying software beats hardware sales exponentially over time. The more console that are in more hands means crazy high numbers of software being sold with a 30% cut for Sony. They're trying to have their cake and eat it too but IMO they are making a mistake by not eating cost or lowering the price on the console now that the tech onside is cheaper.

Why drop the hardware prices and focus on game sales and subscriptions?

Because sooner or later...

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.
