I disagree actually as I think it's a pretty clearly defined subgenre (party-based RPGs with self-contained battles and a linear structure), much more so than "soulslikes" for example, the name is just a bit misleading because not every RPG made in japan is a JRPG and not every JRPG is made in japan (any longer).

Any longer? The first JRPGs by the given definition were Wizardry and Ultima, both games that Dragon Quest took clearly notes from. JRPGs were born in the west!
