Not much value in haveing all the power and money, if your the only person left on the planet.
Imagine all you do, is controll a bunch of robots....

Theres no entertainment.. no other humans to talk too.... just your friendly Ai bot.
I don't think the super elite have much reason to kill off vast amounts of the population.

I wouldn't put it past the US or China, trying to depopulate the world, though a war or virus though.
Maybe WW3 wipes out like 90% of the human population and 10,000 years from now, the planet is right back on track :p
Bacteria, fungus figoured out how to eat plastic, give it some time, most of that will be gone, and some of those forever compounds we poluted the world with as well.

It's coming https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-68927816 (plastic eating bacteria)

The Earth still has 5 billion years left before the sun becomes a Red Dwarf. (Although the last 2 - 3 billion years will be unstable) Plenty time for more civilizations to arise.

But you're right, what's the point of being 'superior' if there's no one left to feel 'superior' to. More likely the super elite simply stop caring bout the masses (or even less then they do now)

Something like Otherland can happen as well, where the super elite retreat into the virtual realm. Upload you consciousness to the cloud.

Can't retreat to the digital realm unless the masses are gone, or under major control. Too much risk of having the masses rebel otherwise, and you can't risk them hacking that digital world or physically destroying what keeps that digital realm operating.

I'd say the opposite is more likely. Get the masses under complete control in a Matrix, in which their real bodies can be kept close together in tight quarters, taking up little space, especially if it's vertical space like the fields of the real world in The Matrix. That would allow the elites to own the entire world, other than a smaller island where the masses could be kept.

But then why even have the masses, period? If it had anything to do with the elites entering that Matrix at times, why not just make billions of NPC's instead? If the elite wanted to feel superior, just make the NPC's dumb, and if they want a serious challenge, make the NPC's some form of AI.

In a world that keeps becoming more and more about efficiency, keeping the masses around in the future wouldn't make sense for the elite. Unless they had a change of heart, or were sociopaths instead of psychopaths, there would be no good reason to keep the masses around.
