You're using of original is a bit strange to me.  What was un original about the Wii version? or the Wii U version?

And do the ones on DS and 3DS not count?

Super Mario 3D world is a weird one. It IS 3D but it far more in common with 2D than any of the 3d mario games.

Those were just iterations of NSMB DS. By 2012 when NSMB 2 and NSMB U both came out months apart a lot of people got sick of them and have been wanting something original that has its own unique identity and feel.
