Everyone complains about backtracking for energy cells. If you explored the rooms properly earlier in the game, you would have most of the energy cells when the game asks you to get them, so minimal backtracking :) That so many people complain about it just shows they didn't pay enough attention to the game environment, and exploring properly is what Metroid is all about.
