After 4 weeks PS5 is already 80k up on last year, 171k to 91k. If Sony can provide enough units then PS5 could sell 2 million in 2023, something that the PS4 couldn't achieve.

PS4 v PS5 Famitsu sales.

PS4

2014:
 926k (released Feb)
2015: 1.21 million
2016: 1.79 million
2017: 1.94 million
2018: 1.69 million
2019: 1.20 million
2020: 543k
2021: 104k
2022: 23k
Total: 9.42 mllion

PS5

2020:
 255k (released Nov)
2021: 968k
2022: 1.15 million

It’s kinda wild that the PS4 never reached 2 million units sold in any year it’s been on the market in Japan. It basically had all of the AAA Japanese games under the sun:

- FFXIV

- FFXV

- FFVIIR

- DQXI

- Metal Gear Solid V

- Monster Hunter World

- Resident Evil VII

- Resident Evil Village

- Resident Evil 2 Remake

- Resident Evil 3 Remake

- Devil May Cry 5

- Persona 5

- Nier Automata

- Tekken 7

- Street Fighter 5

- Elden Ring

- Dark Souls 3

- Seikiro

And nowadays we’re talking about the Switch possibly selling 3-4 million this year and ready for the console to set off into the sunset. Not saying it’s right or wrong, but it’s interesting reflecting on the two consoles. I know people will mention differences between the consoles and their prices, but you gotta also consider that the Switch is selling games at relatively close to home console prices, not at DS/3DS game prices.

You think the PS5 will reach 2 million this year because of improved stock to meet the initial demand? Or is there a game that could potentially be that mega hit that will drive console sales? Could it be FFXVI or Spider Man 2?

I think providing enough stock will be enough to get it close to 2 million and then factor in games like FFXVI and Resident Evil 4R then it should do it.
