They aren't in direct competition in the sense both are disputing the same pool of customers and making them choose between one system or other likewise Xbox does
But Switch strong presence in Japan is making games that used to be exclusive from Sony to be released on Switch. As JP developers, besides the real big ones, don't take much advantage of hardware and Japanese people don't seem really interested in better graphics PS5 offers little value over Switch: It's a more expensive system that offers mostly the same games without Nintendo exclusives
So they can stick to having only one console when in past they could have purchased both Sony and Nintendo
