In case of the Switch, you can remove the Joycons (not on Switch Lite though) and put them in another pocket. But that also is annoying, constantly applying and removing the Joycons. I personally use a carrying case for my Switch and put it in my backpack. So a Steam Deck wouldn't be different in that regard.
