they can't just cut the cost in japan, especially when the japanese prices of japanese consoles is already the lowest in the world if you factor in conversion. if its any cheaper then it already is, its just going to be shipped around like crazy, undercutting a lot of the profit margins sony would get elsewhere.
nintendo's recent price cut in europe was mostly casue conversion rate changes in the past 4 years.
