I really don't think 2D Metroid will ever be much of a seller, and Metroid-likes simply don't sell thaat well. Hollow Knight is the best-selling 2D Metroid-like that I can find any information on, and even it's sold only about 3 million copies despite a fairly low price and critical acclaim.
