IT's so hard to gauge because the current climate is so unlike what it was 7 years ago. the pandemic means more people are gaming and finding solace in the medium, but it also means production is down. Both brands (and let's be honest, neither Xbox nor Playstation are competing with Nintendo so for this argument let's leave them out of this) are on clear trajectories and have a lot of history guiding where they look like they're going.
It's also so hard to quantify the future when it comes to Xbox's 23 studios. Like, on one hand, yeah! 23 studios is a LOT, and some of those studios have a HUGE pedigree. By all means, they should be pumping out a new game every month! But on the flip side here in reality, nothing has come of it. I know people like to say 'give it time' and 'they just bought the studios', but it's been years since they started acquiring studios and we've seen nothing new or interesting or exclusive. Oh, and let's not forget the tragedy that was Rare's acquisition.
The point is, on that front, Microsoft has all the potential in the world to REALLY stick it to Sony. I know nobody believes me when I say this but I genuinely want them to knock it out of the park because I like having more games, I love having all consoles, and I'd be happy to pick up an Xbox, but the reality is that just hasn't happened yet. they've been promising for years and I've seen almost nothing come of it since like 2015 or 2016 or something. One can only hope so many times before you realize it's all smoke and mirrors.
The reason Playstation is doing so well and will probably even put more distance between itself and its competitor is that they ARE releasing games. they ARE offering incentives. There's a reason to have a PS5. so much so that, in this house, we'd rather get a 2nd PS5 than get an Xbox Series X because all three of us like playing PlayStation games and the only one of the three of us that plays Microsoft games does so on PC.
I'm sure Microsoft will do very well for themselves - Gamepass clearly makes them money and they do have a handful of exclusives that also come to PC - but as time goes on it's clearer and clearer that Microsoft has little to no place in the console race if they're not gonna give people incentive to buy consoles. buy their games, sure, but their console lacks identity or enough variety to justify itself. it's just a stronger Xbox One. It feels less like Next Generation and more like an iteration of last generation. Microsoft should go third party publisher so that Nintendo and Sony can both do their own thing and maximize their respective marketplaces. Nintendo does the handheld and family friendly stuff, Sony does the 4-quadrant worldwide power stuff.
