41 million is like two of PS4's peak years, and it's being replaced in a month and a half.

then again, I don't think anyone was anticipating in 2006 that PS2 was going on to sell another ~50M more units

but with PS2 sony did the right thing, did a price cut, continue to provide full support and very good marketing even with PS3 out on the market

I bet that if PS4 was discounted to 199$ last year, it would have the stamina to reach at least 140M lifetime, and possibly 150M with another one cut to 149$ but they didn't :( ...

I think another big factor in PS2's colossal sales was that PS3 (and 360 as a competitor) were slow out of the gate so a lot of folks saw no reason to upgrade any time soon and kept buying PS2s well into Gen 7. I think PS5 by contrast will be off to a fast start.
