Sure, but to play Game Pass, you need a device. The more devices MS can offer, the better the chance someone will purchase a device, leading them to sub to Game Pass. For now anyway.
Even if MS didn't care that much about the hardcore spec gamers, they need them to help their ecosystem grow early on. Once the service grows large enough, they can forget about the highest most expensive performance products if they want to. Perhaps even all of them. Whether they will or not, we'll see. Though having a device or two of your own isn't exactly the worst idea because you can't always rely entirely on other companies products.

PS4 - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.
PRO -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.
PS5 - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.
PRO -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.
