Just Finished: Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)

The level of polish and ingenuity is in this game is off the charts. Is it just me, or am I starting to get a lot a rape-y vibes from Bowser towards Peach? At least Bowser wants to put a ring on it, which is more than Mario has tried in 35 years. The art direction is 90% spectacular. The realistic proportions of the inhabitants of New Donk City and the more realistic dragon and T-rex textures don't gel with the rest of the game though. The gameplay is as smooth as butter. The music is phenomenal from the OST to "Jump Up, Superstar". Pauline makes a welcome return and has more of a personality than Peach. This game weaves the classic 2d platforming into the 3D Mario series better than any of the previous games did. The boss battles with the Broodals (who are otherwise a great addition) are simple and repetitive. I only just beat Bowser with about 145 moons, so I still have a lot of the game left to explore. I prefer Cappy to Luna from Mario Galaxy. While reminiscent of Kirby, the cap throwing ability to take over enemy moves is a brilliant mechanic. It opens so many more possibilities. It is easy to grasp how to control and explore through the eyes of the new characters. I played mostly in docked mode but I think the game works fine handheld as well. I enjoyed dressing Mario in new costumes as well. I haven't tried the 2 player mode but I'm sure it blows. I can feel the influence of the Galaxy games especially later towards the moon stage. The sandbox walled gardens level work well. I think this is more a blend of Mario 64 and the Galaxy games, rather than a successor to 64 as Nintendo billed it. This might be the most purely enjoyable game that I have played this year. I think it is great how the game is designed to be accessible for younger players but intriguing to more seasoned gamers as well. Don't trust people with Kim Possible avatars when they try to tell you that 2D Mario is Nintendo's crown jewel of platformers, everyone knows that 3D Mario is the real star of the show. Super Mario Odyssey only reinforces that point.
