Just Finished: Bayonetta (Free Download Included with Retail Version of Bayonetta 2) (Switch)

I give this game points for sheer bravura. I do not find Bayonetta attractive though which makes her constant sexual posturing and dancing annoying and silly. The game is over-sexualized and the gameplay is unbalanced. The game is downright stingy with the health, which does not make the game challenging but cheap. Quicktime events also bog down the gameplay and are not that fun. I feel the game works better in docked mode though I give the developers credit for trying to use the touchscreen in portable mode. Graphically the game looks fine for a 10 year old title that has been ported so many times. The story is batshit insane and I did not feel invested in it at all. Other than Jeanne I was not sure what motivation the other enemies had to kill Bayonetta, there was no emotion to it. The mix of cutscenes and animation stills weren't appealing either. I think the sword should be Bayonetta's default weapon, I used it much more than the guns. The final boss was a pain in the ass especially with that cheap one-hit-kill attack. Also the game's attempt to break up the hacking and slashing with segments such as riding a motorcycle, riding a missile, or controlling a gun turret went on way too long and were not as fun as the developers might have thought they were. The music was catchy at least. I think the controls and combat system get too complex as you buy more techniques. I may sound pretty critical of this game but I give Platinum credit for the amount of originality and polish they packed into this game. The length was satisfactory. I won't be replaying though. I considered playing this game on PS4 through the Bayonetta/Vanquish remastered package for the trophies and better graphics. In the end I went with the Switch version because I figured I could experience the entire trilogy on one platform. Kudos to Nintendo for keeping this series alive and adding a M rated title to their catalog.
