Just Finished: Killzone HD (PS Now)

I scooped up a 12 Month PS Now subscription during the Days of Play sale. Killzone HD is the first game I played through my new subscription (initially played Asura's Wrath through PS Now trial years ago). I was looking into buying Killzone Trilogy for PS3 on disc but the price was similar to what I paid for my entire subscription that comes with all of the major Killzone games. This game is terrible. The graphics are bad even for a PS2 game. There is so much black, brown, and grey. I appreciate that the campaign tried to mix up the environments going from a city park, to jungles, to snowy mountains etc. but the geography of the level design is very copy and paste repetitive. The gameplay is very basic with little variation. The shooting is not very fun you can barely see more than 4 feet ahead of you most of the time which leads to a lot of cheap deaths by unseen enemies. The distribution of check points is also horribly off balanced. Some levels have many checkpoints while others have none at all forcing you to restart the level from the beginning if you die. Sometimes it is not clear which direction you are supposed to go to progress. Having four playable characters is a nice touch that adds replayability even if the ally AI is basic. Your allies also repeat the same lines ad nauseum with the stereotypical Rico being the worst offender. The story is ridiculously generic, I still do not know what the title Killzone refers to. As an HD remaster this game is a disaster, it lacks any polish or visual upgrades. Even the cutscenes look muddy as hell. The other good thing I can say about the campaign is that it is pretty lengthy. It took me 20 hours to finish the game though I am ashamed to admit I spent that much time playing. I cannot believe Sony used this to launch their major FPS franchise, it is embarrassing. The game also includes the offline Battlefields multiplayer mode where you can compete against bots. I added one extra point for the decent multiplayer experience. At least the rest of the games in the series are supposed to be better than this hot mess though I will probably take a breather before playing them.
