2DS isn't the same system that launched in 2011, Pro isn't the same PS4 that launched in 2013, revisions changing fundamental aspects of a system is nothing new.
As for the age old question of "is the Switch a handheld/hybrid/console" I honestly think that's a pointless argument. Call it whatever you want, it ultimately doesn't matter.
